Raspberries: Berry Good for Your Heart, Blood Sugar, and Bones In addition to the benefits listed below, raspberries also can have a significant impact on liver, diabetes, inflammation and bone health.
“A flurry of studies recently released at the 2016 Experimental Biology conference in San Diego points to raspberries as a superfood. In general, the studies found that red raspberries have multiple health benefits ranging from fighting inflammation and boosting cardiovascular and liver function to keeping glucose levels in check. Here are the highlights:
Cardiovascular: Research from the University of Michigan studied the effects of a raspberry-rich diet on cardiac risk factors in mice. Rats prone to obesity were fed a high-fat diet that contained either 2 percent freeze-dried whole raspberry powder or added sugars equal to the same number of calories.
The rats fed raspberry powder showed reduced levels of triglycerides and glucose. In addition, the rats fed raspberries showed a significant reduction in the left ventricular enlargement of the heart together with reduced wall thickening. Enlargement and thickening of the left ventricle and a thickening of the heart wall are known risk factors for heart failure. The animals also showed an increase in liver function.
The study authors concluded that red raspberries could be an excellent addition to the diet to help manage cardiometabolic risk, including risk for Type 2 diabetes. They also stated that eating red raspberries could reduce cardiovascular problems like heart failure, which is the main diagnosis in people over the age of 65.
Metabolic syndrome: Research published in The FASEB Journal studied the effect of raspberries in mice fed a typical Western diet high in fat and sugar. Groups of mice were fed either low-fat or high-fat diets with and without various forms of raspberries — either juice concentrate, freeze-dried powder, or raspberry phytochemicals.”

Don’t Throw Out Old Garlic! Sprouted Garlic Is Extra Healthful
“You’re ready to cook up a favorite healthful, high-flavor dish, so you grab your ingredients, including that garlic bulb you bought a few weeks ago. But to your dismay, you see green shoots emerging from the garlic. Do you assume that it’s no longer fresh and toss the sprouted bulb away? Don’t! Not only is that sprouted garlic still OK, it’s even better for you than an unsprouted bulb would be, according to a recent study.
Garlic truly is a superfood—it lowers blood pressure and triglycerides…enhances the immune system…and has potent antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anticancer and antioxidant properties. Researchers decided to see whether “old” garlic that has sprouted would show any changes in its nutritional powers, so they allowed ordinary garlic to sprout. Then the garlic and sprouts were minced, ground and turned into an extract. For comparison, a similar extract was prepared using unsprouted garlic.
Next, the researchers did a nutritional analysis of both extracts. They discovered that the extracts were nearly the same in terms of their phenolic content (phenols are bioactive, beneficial aromatic compounds), with the sprouted garlic extract coming out slightly ahead. Then they tested how well the extracts’ antioxidants were able to scavenge free radicals, a process that prevents damaging oxidative reactions from harming cells.
Startling discovery: The scavenging ability of the sprouted garlic was much higher! For instance, garlic that had been sprouting for five days had nearly twice as much scavenging activity as unsprouted garlic.”
Energy drinks trigger abnormal heart rhythm, rise in blood pressure
“A clinical trial led by researchers from University of the Pacific and David Grant Medical Center adds to the evidence that energy drinks may be bad for your heart.
“Our findings suggest certain energy drinks may increase the risk of having an abnormal heart rhythm when consumed in high volumes,” said primary investigator Sachin A Shah, an associate professor of pharmacy practice at Pacific’s Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “While we wait for more data, some consumers should exercise caution and not blindly follow the buzz.”
Exercise
Briefly Standing, Walking Lowers Blood Sugar
“For obese people who sit for most of the day, replacing some sitting time with standing, slow walking or slow cycling reduces average blood sugar across the day and into the night, a small study finds…
“We chose a typical workday because a large number of Americans spend a lot of time sitting at an office desk, and a number of (studies) indicate sitting is a health hazard, so we reckoned that trying to alleviate that by either standing or walking or cycling would help,” Gaesser told Reuters Health…
[P]articipants gradually replaced some of that sitting time with standing, in intervals of 10 to 30 minutes for a total of two and half hours per day…
“We found that the overall reduction in blood sugar throughout the 24-hour day was typically 5 percent to 12 percent, with the greatest effect being in cycling,” Gaesser said.
After a meal of carbohydrates, most blood sugar is disposed of in skeletal muscle, and muscle contractions increase insulin activity and glucose uptake, which helps to lower blood sugar, he said.
“For low-level activity throughout the workday, the effect lasts well after the last exercise bout at 4:30 or 5:00 in the afternoon,” continuing into sleep, he said.”
Vitamin D
7 Signs of Vitamin D Deficiency NOT to Ignore This is an important article because Vitamin D deficiency is so prevalent and this may be the most important vitamin supplement you can take. These signs include sweaty head, exhaustion, depression, muscle weakness, aching bones and joints, dark skinned and/or constant health issues.
“Almost half of the U.S. population suffers from vitamin D deficiency and many people aren’t even aware of the warning signs. The proper amount of vitamin D gives you an edge of almost an 80% reduction in risk of developing breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer and other diseases.
Before developing any of these disastrous illnesses, there are physical symptoms that can signal that you have a problem which needs to be addressed by normalizing your vitamin D blood level.
It’s actually not that hard to find out if your vitamin D level is adequate. You can order on online home test kit and do it yourself. Or, you can ask you doctor to order a lab test done. It’s really quite easy. The Vitamin D Council recommends that taking 5, 000 I.U. a day is a safe amount for just about anybody to maintain good health. They also state that vitamin D3 is the best kind of supplement to take.”
Animal study suggests vitamin D may help prevent and treat autistic symptoms
“Recently, scientists from Saudi Arabia conducted a randomized controlled trial using vitamin D to both protect and treat an induced autistic brain in rats.
The authors concluded:
“Based on the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and DNA repair actions of vitamin D reported in the present study, vitamin D could be used as a supplement in patients with autism to ameliorate the symptoms related to these pathways. As maternal vitamin D deficiency may predispose children to autism, a high consumption of vitamin D-rich seafood, and an avoidance of the use of sunblock during pregnancy could be suggested as an autism prevention strategy.”
We will shortly announce that 2016 will be the year that vitamin D’s treatment and preventative effects on autism will be emphasized.”
Cancer News/ Vitamin D
Low vitamin D predicts aggressive prostate cancer
“A new study provides a major link between low levels of vitamin D and aggressive prostate cancer. Research showed deficient vitamin D blood levels in men can predict aggressive prostate cancer identified at the time of surgery. The finding is important because it can offer guidance to men and their doctors who may be considering active surveillance, in which they monitor the cancer rather than remove the prostate.”

Researchers find association between oral bacteria and esophageal cancer
“Findings represent the first direct evidence that P. gingivalis could be a risk factor for esophageal cancer
Researchers have found a bacterial species responsible for gum disease, Porphyromonas gingivalis, is present in 61 percent of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.”
Cancer News/ Omega 3 Oils
Fish Oil Offers Protection Against Breast Cancer
“Chalk up another health benefit tied to fish consumption. New research shows omega-3 fatty acids — in fish and fish oil — may lower the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal obese women.
Penn State College of Medicine researchers believe the protection likely comes from the fatty acids’ anti-inflammatory effects, said Andrea Manni, professor and division chief of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism who helped lead the study.
“Omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect, so that’s one of the reasons why we suspected it may be particularly effective in obese women,” Manni said.
Past studies have suggested omega-3s protect against breast cancer, but the findings have been inconsistent. Other studies have found obesity is a major breast cancer risk factor in postmenopausal women, and scientists believe increased inflammation is an important underlying cause in this population.
Manni said the Penn research suggests normal-weight women have less inflammation than heavier women, and are therefore less likely to benefit from anti-inflammatory omega-3s.”
Pet Health
Fourteen Dogs Perish In Heat-Related Accident In Indiana August is traditionally the hottest month of the year, and we’d like to remind everyone to keep their pets out of the car because the temperature can rise quickly. Even if you leave the air on, there is no way to guarantee your pet’s safety. If you must take your dog, be certain that the air is on high and working correctly, then check on them every 10 minutes because an accident like this is tragic.
Audie is especially upset and angry about this news, since all of the dogs were golden retrievers. For more information on this topic, see our earlier post, PET HEALTH: Dogs and Cars
“Northwest Indiana police are calling it a tragic accident: Fourteen competition show dogs die from heat inside a truck after the air conditioner malfunctions. CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar reports a kennel is now under investigation.
St. Joseph County Humane Society Executive Director Genny Carlson loves dogs. That’s why what happened at a South Bend Quality Inn parking lot last Friday upsets her. “It is absolutely a first for me. I’ve been here for 10 years,” she says.
The tragedy occurred when an Ohio woman tasked with hauling 14 golden retrievers to a dog show being held in South Bend. She took a nap in her motel room. She left the dogs in an air-conditioned truck, as the sun beat down. Two and half hours later she woke up.
“That’s when they discovered that something had gone terribly wrong,” Carlson says. The A/C in the truck had gone out, killing the dogs.”
How to Treat Your Pet’s Summer Bug Bites, Stings This is a very good article, one worth downloading and saving for future reference because it gives good, practical advice about when to use ice, what type of over-the-counter medications can be used, etc.
“Insect bites and stings are not only a nuisance for humans; they can be devastating for your pet this summer.
Insects such as bees, wasps, fleas, ticks, and ants can inflict pain and also transmit dreaded diseases such as heartworm and the deadly Chagas disease. Keeping your pets safe and protected this summer is crucial, experts say.
“Dogs tend to chase bees and wasps, which increases their risk for potentially deadly insect attacks,” Dr. Stacey West, DVM, of the Boca Veterinary Clinic in Florida tells Newsmax Health. “The fur on your pets provides some protection against this pesky problem but it can also conceal bites and stings.”
Experts note that paws, tummies with minimal fur, and mouths are at a greater risk. Here are some do-it-yourself treatments that can help alleviate the pain and possible infection from insect wounds.
“But please, if your pet shows any signs of distress such as trembling, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, extreme facial swelling, hives, or trouble breathing, bring it to your vet or emergency clinic immediately as these can be signs of an anaphylactic reaction,” says West.”
Conclusion
Your physical health is very important, but of even greater importance is your spiritual health. Man suffers from a fatal spiritual disease called sin, which always leads to death.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
This is why Jesus Christ said we need the Spirit of God who gives us eternal life with Him. We need to be “born again” with a new spirit that is not subject to sin and death.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Right now, through repentance of the spiritual disease called sin, you can come to Jesus Christ, the Great Physician, for healing and assurance of eternal life.
Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
For those who love the Lord Jesus and are looking for His coming, the following is their future:
Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
