pesticide-food-2The health of consumers in the United States is being systematically destroyed through contaminated and genetically modified foods. Consumption of these foods not only deprives the body of nutrients because they are lacking in the foods themselves, but it also is killing off essential bacteria in the gut and altering the DNA of those eating these foods. In addition, it is aiding the rise of superbugs as they become resistant through over-exposure to foods sprayed with chemicals and laced with pesticide genes. Today humans and animals are taking in high amounts of Monsanto round-up, not only because the food is sprayed but through actual genetic changes which incorporate this substance within the crops themselves.

Pesticides are some of the deadliest substances known. Not only can they directly poison living beings if consumed, they also kill essential bacteria and are responsible for numerous types of cancer. Yet our diets (and those of the animals we keep as pets, as well as the animals that end up in our meat department) are subject to increasing amounts of these substances. It’s not surprising that there is a cancer epidemic in the nation, and that many other chronic diseases are proliferating as well. All of us, humans and animals alike, are being poisoned by the foods that we eat.

Organic food is more costly and often more difficult to find. Because of that many people argue that they can’t afford to purchase it. But when we look at the health costs associated with eating non-organics, that argument falls apart. Given the cost in medical care both for us and for our pets, can we afford not to purchase organic? In the long run, what is a drastically shortened life which is troubled by frequent illness, worth? With epidemics becoming frequent and new reports about the hazards of traditional medical treatments like vaccines becoming headline news, the only way to protect yourself is through a strong immune system. And that requires fresh, uncontaminated and unmodified foods.

But none of the three are really what they seem, and all have hidden agendas designed to profit those entities behind them. For the most part, what they’re really about is profit and money. But there is another “war” taking place that is more effective and more covert than any of these and that is the war on bugs. It also may be the most deadly for average Americans.

There is a war going on, between GMO food and organic food. There is relatively NO GRAY AREA in between anymore. Most conventional food is doused with so much pesticide in order to fight back superbugs and superweeds that anyone consuming it is most likely instigating cell mutation and, therefore, some form of cancer in their bodies. No surgery, medication, chemotherapy or radiation in the world can prevent or cure this type of blood cancer that develops from the constant consumption of toxic herbicide and insecticide, like RoundUp and atrazine. Government Requires Pasteurization of All Almonds, Even Organic & Raw  The FDA is now requiring that all almonds shipped in North America be pasteurized, even organic and raw almonds. The FDA has approved propylene oxide and steam treatment for pasteurization. Although steam meets the standards of the USDA Organic Program, heat destroys the nutritional value of the nuts.

This pasteurization requirement applies not only to whole nuts but to all products containing them, including oils and butters, no matter how they’ve been processed. A serving of 23 almonds has as many flavonoid antioxidants as one serving of cooked broccoli. Pasteurization is ostensibly “to ensure consumers are provided with safe, wholesome food products, without comprising the almond qualities.” This clearly is untrue.

“Almonds that have been pasteurized are heated to the point where their life force is almost entirely dissipated. Recent scientific studies show that heating almonds creates potentially harmful levels of acrylamide, a threatening byproduct of the amino acid asparagine. Acrylamide is a chemical known to cause cancer, or reproductive toxicity (such as birth defects and other reproductive harm).

 WHERE CAN YOU FIND TRUE ORGANIC RAW ALMONDS?
Not in any retailer in the United States… all California almonds labeled “raw” must be steam-pasteurized or chemically treated with propylene oxide. However, this does not apply to imported almonds.
Spain is the second largest almond producer in the world and also offers some of the best almonds in the world which are unpasteurized. Many raw food companies started selling unpasteurized imported almonds from countries like Spain and Italy to the benefit of consumers.”

High Levels Of Arsenic Found In Some Rice; California Rice Safe Researchers are advising that pregnant women completely remove rice from their diets and that children be limited to one quarter cup of rice weekly. Other adults should limit their intake to no more than one half cup per week because of toxic arsenic levels found in almost all brands.

“Consumer Reports found significant levels of arsenic in apple juice earlier this year, and now, the magazine has a new study, showing many brands of rice also contain the toxin.
The arsenic enters into the rice when it is grown …the rice with the highest levels of arsenic is from Texas and Louisiana, and along the Gulf coast where fields were used to grow cotton a century ago.
“When there was cotton there they had to treat the cotton with arsenic pesticides to control the bowl weevil,” he said. “Now a century later, that arsenic is still in the soil, the rice is very effective at pulling it out of the soil and it concentrates in the rice.”
Arsenic causes lung, skin and bladder cancer, Landrigan said. He added that arsenic is also very harmful to babies’ brain development. If a baby is exposed to arsenic in the womb because the mother is eating arsenic or if a baby ingests arsenic in the first months of life in cereal, rice milk or other food, the arsenic could interfere with brain development, reduce the child’s intelligence, and cause behavioral problems.
Stay with California rice, stay with Asian rice or when in doubt go with barley, go with oatmeal,” he said. “The smart thing to do is to be concerned and not do it. … Just avoid the rice.”
He added brown rice often contains more arsenic than white rice because it contains the plant’s shells.”

“Consumer Reports has released a new report about arsenic levels in rice and rice products, the findings of which may come as a surprise to many. It turns out that virtually every rice product on the market today contains detectable levels of toxic arsenic, including many “all-natural” and organic rice products.

After conducting tests on more than 200 samples of rice products, which included dry rice, infant cereals, hot cereals, ready-to-eat cereals, rice cakes and crackers, rice flour, rice drinks, rice syrup, and rice vinegar, Consumer Reports investigators found that every single sample had detectable levels of both organic and inorganic arsenic, the latter of which has been shown to cause cancer. In most cases, the worst offenders were rice products made from rice grown in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas.

Brown rice was typically found to have higher arsenic levels than white rice, and people who eat rice were determined to have arsenic levels that were about 44 percent higher compared to people who do not eat rice.

Sadly, some of the worst arsenic offenders in the Consumer Reports investigation include Whole Foods 365 Everyday Value Long Grain Brown Rice, Barbara’s Brown Rice Crisps, Trader Joe’s Organic Brown Rice Pasta Fusilli, and DeBoles Rice Spirals.

Other surprising rice products on the arsenic list include several varieties of Lundberg Family Farms brand rice, Earth’s Best Organic Whole Grain Rice Infant Cereal, several varieties of Bob’s Red Mill rice products, Arrowhead Mills Organic Sweetened Rice Flakes, and Organic Rice Dream Classic Original Rice Drink, as well as many of the usual suspects in the conventional and mainstream rice market.

Coffee Helps Combat Obesity: Study

“Coffee may do more than simply perk up your morning routine. Researchers at the University of Georgia have found a chemical compound in coffee may help prevent some of the damaging effects of obesity.

In new research published in the journal Pharmaceutical Research, UGA scientists determined that chlorogenic acid, or CGA, significantly reduced insulin resistance and accumulation of fat in the livers of mice who were fed a high-fat diet, Medical Xpress reports.

“Previous studies have shown that coffee consumption may lower the risk for chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” said lead researcher Yongjie Ma.They found that CGA was not only effective in preventing weight gain, but it also helped maintain normal blood sugar levels and healthy liver composition.”

Family Meals Stave Off Obesity: Study

“Researchers from the University of Minnesota and Columbia University found that family meals may be protective against obesity because coming together for meals may provide “opportunities for emotional connections among family members, the food is more likely to be healthful, and adolescents may be exposed to parental modeling of healthful eating behaviors.”

The study… also found family meals tend to include more fruits, vegetables, calcium, and whole grains — often missing from meals eaten away from home, from fast-food restaurants, or consumed on the go. The findings are based on an analysis of information from a 10-year study that tracked the dining habits and weight of 2,287 adolescents.

They showed that 51 percent of the participants were overweight and 22 percent were obese. Among those who reported that they never ate family meals together, 60 percent were overweight and 29 percent were obese. But those who reported having even one or two family meals a week during adolescence were markedly less likely to be overweight or obese than those who said they never had family meals during adolescence.”

“Lifting weights not only pumps up your muscles, but also gives your memory a boost. That’s the upshot of new research out of Georgia Institute of Technology that found an intense body-building workout — as little as 20 minutes — can enhance long-term memory by about 10 percent.

The study…involved a group of volunteers who were asked to lift weights just once two days before researchers tested their memories of events and photos they were asked to study before working out.

After exercising, the participants were able to recall 60 percent of the photos and events, while a similar group of individuals who did not work out could recall only 50 percent.”

Obesity Not Only Cause of Type 2 Diabetes: Researchers

“Although the type 2 diabetes epidemic is commonly linked to being overweight or obese, excess weight isn’t the only factor driving the trend… [A]t least three new studies have reported on other factors that may underlie a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. These factors include genetic mutations, a lesser-known hormone called amylin, as well as disturbances in the body’s natural clock.

Genes definitely play a role…. Family history and ethnicity also play a role. A sedentary lifestyle is also associated with the development of type 2 diabetes.

[D]isruptions in the body’s internal clock may be a factor in the development of type 2 diabetes. The researchers noted that today’s 24/7 lifestyles constantly disrupt the body’s natural sleep/wake cycles. Factors such as nocturnal lighting, shift work and unusual timing of food can throw the body’s clock off.

Whatever the additional causes might be, right now, weight is one of the few modifiable factors that can help manage type 2 diabetes. “If people lose just 5 to 10 percent of their body weight, they can make a difference in their diabetes. Exercise definitely plays a role, too….”

Although the jazz worked faster in reducing heart rate and anxiety, the noise cancellation headphones worked significantly faster in easing pain.

The level of oxytocin corresponds to the amount of feeling present, and it can make us feel concern even for strangers. It also is what makes us care for our pets, to the point that we will spend thousands of dollars on a sick pet rather than merely euthanize it and get another. Pet owners who are attached to their animals will tell you that their pets love them just as much, but is that true? Researchers recently began to investigate this claim, with some interesting results. Not only do our animals have loving feelings toward their owners, they also have those feelings toward one another. So when we believe our pet is grieving over the loss of a friend, we are reading their feelings accurately. Just as we were created with hormones to ensure we love both one another and our pets, so too our pets have been created the same way.

“Zak found a small domestic terrier and a goat who regularly played with each other and seemed to have a strong friendship. After fifteen minutes of play — during which the friends chased, played, and jumped with one another — the dog showed a 48 percent increase in oxytocin. This rise indicated that the dog truly did view the goat as a friend. The goat, on the other hand, had a 210 percent increase in oxytocin. A similar rise in humans would indicate intense feelings of love.

He states, “This experiment led me to undertake experiments on animal-human relations to try to understand how animals make us care so much about them.” A recent article showcased other benefits of having pets, such as staving off depression, but this study showcases the direct effect oxytocin has on the animal-human relationship and the loving, positive bond that is created.

So, do animals feel love? You bet! And we love our pets unconditionally, too.

Conclusion

Your physical health is very important, but of even greater importance is your spiritual health. Man suffers from a fatal spiritual disease called sin, which always leads to death.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

This is why Jesus Christ said we need the Spirit of God who gives us eternal life with Him. We need to be “born again” with a new spirit that is not subject to sin and death.

Right now, through repentance of the spiritual disease called sin, you can come to Jesus Christ, the Great Physician, for healing and assurance of eternal life.

Choosing food for safety and nutrition takes some education and some work

Most of the food sold today is genetically modified to contain herbicides, genes from insects, or other unsavory things that you’d never eat if you knew about them. Or it is filled with pesticides that not only accumulate in your body but can pass through you to your offspring. And that’s in its raw state; most Americans consume a great deal of highly processed food, which contains all manner of chemicals.

What isn’t in that food? Nutrients, minerals, vitamins – the things our bodies need to function. Normally, minerals are absorbed from the soil into fruits and vegetables as they grow. But the soil long has been depleted of these essential nutrients. So even at their best, they don’t contain all we need. To avoid the worst, purchase organics, though even organics are permitted to contain 5% of these noxious substances.

Then there’s meat. Although it doesn’t have the same problems as food grown in the soil, the animals raised for consumption are eating those genetically modified crops and as noted, that passes into their own DNA and on to consumers.

Is there anything you can eat that actually has what it should and doesn’t have what it shouldn’t? Food you grow yourself using heirloom seeds and old-fashioned methods to enrich the soil, like compost, is a start. Purchasing locally grown food from a farmer’s market doesn’t ensure safety, but at least you can ask about the origins of the produce. And while the label “USDA Organic” isn’t a guarantee of protection, it will eliminate much of what’s undesirable from your diet. Recognize that “all natural” isn’t a substitute for organic; in fact, it may be a tip-off that you’re being deceived about ingredients. Be a savvy consumer – read labels and eat food that’s as close to its original form as possible. It’s not just junk food that’s unhealthy today.

“What if you thought your salads were giving you lots of nutrients, and your fruit was rewarding your body with vitamins, and you drank lots of water all the time? Wouldn’t you assume that you are fairly healthy? You could be eating dead food that sounds healthy and heading for a health nightmare you can’t even see coming, because some of the worst disorders and diseases don’t “show up” until it’s late in the game, and you are “way behind.” You could get a head start on the whole thing, if you just knew more about dead food, dead soil and genetically modified organisms. You could turn the tables and stay “out in front” of this genetically mutated food “war” – and you could stop eating food that isn’t really food and doesn’t contain any nutritional value whatsoever.

1. Dead Soil: The synthetic, lab-concocted toxins that the Biotech Industry is dishing out are extreme and are killing the soil, literally, all across the USA. If there are no nutrients in the soil, there are none in the food, and that is a scientific fact.

2. GMO: Genetically modified organisms are exactly that – gene altered. It says not to do it in the Bible, and any sane person’s brain tells them that it’s a really bad idea…. People are consuming the genes of insects, foreign bacteria and viruses mixed with bacteria that kill good bacteria in your intestines. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is PESTICIDE SYRUP.

3. Cooked Food: Even if there are any nutrients left at all in conventional food …it usually gets baked, fried, broiled, grilled or toasted, and that ends that. Most cooked food is dead food once it is heated above 118 degrees Fahrenheit, although there are some exceptions….

You can fix the problem by knowing what you are choosing before you ever even set foot in another store… You have to know the history of how things got to be the way they are in America, regarding toxic medicine and the toxic food. “When they say it’s “not about the money,” it’s always about the money. ”

The Citric Acid Scam – Even in Organics

Who Knew? Organic Foods Contain a Dose of GMOs  In order to carry the label “USDA organic,” at least 95% of the ingredients must be organic. The ingredients in the other 5% most often are derived from GMO corn sprayed with the Monsanto herbicide, Roundup.

One ingredient often found in that 5% is citric acid. Even though it is a synthetic substance, it’s permitted in foods labeled as organic as long as it is “chemically identical”. That means is there is no certainty the food you’re eating doesn’t contain GMOs, even if it carries the the official “USDA Organic” label.

“The fact is that citric acid does not even come from citric fruit like oranges or lemons. You might have envisioned workers pouring vats of freshly squeezed lemon or orange juice into the product. No, my good friend, citric acid is a product derived from GMO corn! Cheap corn permeates every facet of the American diet … even organics!

 Citric acid is one of the worst offenders. It may be chemically identical to citric acid from oranges and lemons, but it was produced in an industrial process not involving any citric fruits whatsoever. In fact it was probably produced using a GMO mold and GMO corn.

Why, you might ask, is an ingredient derived from GMO corn allowed to go under the name of “citric acid”? On September 26, 2012, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) published a rule that continues its policy of allowing the addition of synthetic nutrients to organic foods.”

Most Foods Labeled ‘Natural’ Contain GMOs: Report  As the video in our Commentary makes clear, most of the foods with the “natural” label contain substantial amounts of genetically modified ingredients. Consumer Reports did independent testing that verified that the “natural” label is misleading many consumers. Recently CR tested for the presence of genetically modified corn or soy, two of the most common GMO ingredients.

While foods labeled as “non-GMO,” or “organic” were found to be free of genetically modified corn and soy, virtually all of the foods labeled as “natural”, or not labeled with any claim related to GMO content, contained substantial amounts of GMO ingredients. Two samples of each in categories such as cereal, chips, and infant formula were tested; altogether GMO content in 80 products was tested. To be considered GMO free, a product can contain “no more than 0.9 percent genetically modified corn or soy”.

Banned GM wheat found in second US state  This article shows one reason why genetically modified crops are so dangerous. It is impossible to contain them once they have gained a foothold in an area, even when the fields are grown merely for the purpose of conducting tests.

“Unregulated genetically modified wheat has emerged in a second location in the United States. No genetically engineered wheat has been approved for US farming, and the discovery of unapproved varieties can pose a threat to trade with countries that have concerns about genetically modified foods.

The herbicide-resistant wheat was found on up to three acres in Montana, while the genetically engineered plants found in Oregon in 2013 were spread over more than 100 acres. The plants were also found at a university research centre in Huntley, Montana, where genetically modified wheat was legally tested by seed giant Monsanto 11 years ago. The plants in Oregon were found in a field that had never conducted such tests, prompting questions about how they got there.”

Cancer Death Rates Now Doubled In Argentina’s GMO Agribusiness Areas 

“According to the report, deaths from cancerous tumors have as much as doubled in areas where genetically modified (GM) crops are grown and agrochemicals are used. That’s not really surprising, given the fact that numerous studies have linked them to cancer, and other detrimental health ailments.

The highest death rate was recorded in the ‘Pampa Gringa’ area. This is where most GM crops are grown, and the most pesticides are used, it makes up a large portion of the Cordoba region. This area and other areas in the region have cancer rates that are way above the national average.”

“Monsanto announced this week that it is opening a new facility in Mexico to research and develop new hybrid types of corn resistant to disease and climate conditions. On the other side of the globe, the Chinese government has launched a media campaign on TV, in newspapers and on the Internet to convince a skeptical population that GMOs are beneficial.

While the Chinese government has long been pro-GMO and sees these crops as the key to feeding its large population, the public has been less than receptive. The Chinese military banned GMOs from its food supply chain last spring.

Last year, a federal judge in Mexico City issued a temporary order stopping the Mexican government from issuing new GMO corn permits. The activists said it would contaminate native corn and undermine its biodiversity. When it was upheld on appeal, Monsanto filed a request in April to remove the judge, saying he was biased. The ban is still in effect.”

If it’s not labeled organic or verified non-GMO: Avoid products made with ingredients that might be derived from GMOs (see list). Quote-Every-Person-Who-PreparesAmericans take more drugs than any other nation in the world, While the industry would have us believe that means we have better medical care, the reality is that many of these drugs are unnecessary and actually suppress the immune system. Given the current fear over Ebola, this is something everyone should think about seriously. For instance, in this post one article links prescription drugs with low vitamin D levels, and vitamin D is crucial for a functioning immune system.

The new drug which may cure Ebola, ZMapp, works through antibodies which the immune system uses to attack foreign objects, like viruses. Sounds promising, right?  But what happens when a patient’s immune system is suppressed so that it cannot work as it is supposed to? Then the drug cannot provide the promised benefit. Even with the best medical care in the world, if an immune system is compromised the likelihood of death is greatly increased. Our bodies are designed to fight off invaders like viruses, and to heal themselves from many illnesses and injuries. But without proper nutrients and attention, this system can’t function and do what it was designed to do.

The featured article, below, addresses this problem and is followed both by articles relating to building immunity and to articles about the outbreak of Ebola, which is dominating the news. We shouldn’t be surprised that this disease is spreading so rapidly. Jesus told us that in the last days one of the signs of His soon return would be increasing plagues.

Israeli company offers cure for Ebola  I saw a brief reference to this story and had to do some searching to find the article. The question is, why? Shouldn’t this be front page news, given the rapid spread of Ebola and the panic that’s ensuing with each new case? It seems to me that the answer is the political correctness which trumps everything else, including health, even in life/death issues. With more nations turning against Israel and instituting boycotts of products from that country, a story such as this should demonstrate the utter foolishness of that position.

“[S]upplies of experimental medicines — including the prototype drug ZMapp — are limited, and “will not be sufficient for several months to come,” the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned Friday.

Protalix, an Israeli biopharmaceutical company, said Saturday that it has the resources to produce the coveted ZMapp, which has recently run out, Israeli site The Times of Israel, citing Channel 2 TV’s report, said Sunday.

In an interview with Channel 2, Dr. Yossi Shaaltiel, the executive vice president of research and development at Protalix, said: “Today our production capacity exceeds our needs, and we would certainly be happy to have the company producing the Ebola drug have us produce the drug for them. We would know how to do it effectively, in large quantities, and in a relatively short period of time.”

When the company started out, Shaaltiel said, “We were considered crazy.”

“Now we are proving that we are the only ones working with the [kind of] plants that [are developed into] pharmaceutical drugs which are approved,” he said.”

Ebola – What You’re Not Being Told  The mainstream media has repeatedly told the public that it is very difficult to contract Ebola, that it only can be spread through physical contact with bodily fluids. This article was updated on October 16th, but the original version ran in July of this year. So this is not new information although it contradicts what the public has been told for months. This article also points out the discrepancy between the actual facts, and the spin put on those facts by the media before they reported the stories.

“A study conducted in 2012 showed that Ebola was able to travel between pigs and monkeys that were in separate cages and were never placed in direct contact.

Though the method of transmission in the study was not officially determined, one of the scientists involved, Dr. Gary Kobinger, from the National Microbiology Laboratory at the Public Health Agency of Canada, told BBC News that he believed that the infection was spread through large droplets that were suspended in the air.

“What we suspect is happening is large droplets; they can stay in the air, but not long; they don’t go far,” he explained. “But they can be absorbed in the airway, and this is how the infection starts, and this is what we think, because we saw a lot of evidence in the lungs of the non-human primates that the virus got in that way.”

“Translation: Ebola IS an airborne virus. (as is annotated in the video and below, I am using this term in the layman’s sense as TRAVELS THROUGH AIR) …On one hand this is a question of semantics, and the point is well taken, but keep in mind that the study did not officially determine how the virus traveled through the air, it merely established that it does travel through the air. … For the average person however what needs to be understood is very simple: if you are in a room with someone infected with Ebola, you are not safe, even if you never touch them or their bodily fluids, and this is not what you are being told by the mainstream media. Essentially I am using the word “airborne” as a layman term.”

Dogs and Ebola: What You Need to Know  At the time this article was published, although they were monitoring people who had been exposed to the Ebola patient from Africa, Texas was not monitoring any animals. Since then, the pet of a nurse who contracted the disease has been quarantined as a precaution, though no other animals are being watched.

“Monkeys, bats and a menagerie of animals can spread Ebola. Now there’s worry that dogs – or one dog in particular – might spread it, too. Officials in Madrid got a court order to euthanize the pet of a Spanish nursing assistant who has the deadly virus.

No case of Ebola spreading to people from dogs has ever been documented, but “clearly we want to look at all possibilities,” said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Dallas, health officials are monitoring 48 people who may have had contact with Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan, but “we are not monitoring any animals at this time,” said Texas Health Commissioner David Lakey.”

Can Dogs (And Other Animals) Get Ebola?  There was an enormous public outcry when Excalibur, the dog owned by a Spanish nurse who contracted Ebola, was euthanized by the government. Although it is clear that dogs can get the virus, they are asymptomatic and normally do not die from it. But because of the uncertainty over the disease, the dog was destroyed. In Texas however, the pet dog of a nurse who recently contracted Ebola has been quarantined, fed and cared for. This seems to be a more reasonable approach, not only to those of us who love dogs but to those who can empathize with a nurse who, while fighting for her life, had to face the trauma of losing her best friend as well. Moreover, the Texas approach provides an opportunity for professionals to study the question of transmission from pets.

“To date, there is no documented case of Ebola spreading to people from dogs or dogs to people, and only one study, carried out by the CDC, looks at whether dogs can get Ebola at all. This research into the prevalence of Ebola-virus antibodies in dogs from regions of Gabon affected by the 2001–2002 outbreak showed that “dogs can be infected by Ebola virus” but exhibit no symptoms and the infection eventually clears.

 David Moore, an expert in infectious diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said that since no dogs showed symptoms of the Ebola virus “there is absolutely no evidence to support a role for dogs in transmission.”

The study also suggests that differences in behavior and diet of pet dogs may alter risks in Ebola transmission. Whereas most dogs in Western Europe are fed dog food, many of the dogs studied in Gabon scavenged for their food, eating small dead animals that could have exposed them to the virus.

Relatively little research has been carried out into the existence of Ebola in many other animals. It is thought that domestic cats are probably immune to it since the virus has not yet been found in any wild felines in Africa.”

For years Americans have been urged to request the generic equivalent of brand name drugs whenever they’re available. There has been a heavily promoted marketing campaign to assure us that they are equivalent in all ways with the brand name drugs they’re meant to replace. The biggest reason for using generics is, of course, cost. And as long as they’re virtually the same as brand name, that’s a good incentive to switch to generics.

But with the rise of global trade, many of the medications Americans take in generic form are being produced in countries like India, where there isn’t regulation and oversight like there is in the US. If you’ve purchased generics before, believing that you’re getting the same drug in a different form, and that the only real difference is cost, think again. Even if they were “equivalent” in the past, that no longer is the case and there have been serious recalls of late, along with tests that reveal the American consumer may be gambling with his life by purchasing generics. At a minimum, the drug you get may not do what it is supposed to do; at worst, you may end up very ill or dead, depending on what the medication is for.

I’ve seen this first-hand with my cat, Hosanna (pictured here, yawning, with her brother Necco). She began her diabetes treatment with a specific generic and when I switched to any other, she would begin vomiting constantly. Thinking that was odd, I did some research and found her “generic” is actually made by Pfizer, the company who makes the brand name of the drug she takes. Because their “generic” version is actually the brand, just labeled as generic, it’s much cheaper so I’ve stuck with it. But the pharmacy has a note never to substitute her usual type for a different generic. Regardless of the advertising hype, they aren’t all the same.

“A new analysis by the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research reveals extensive problems with the quality of generics produced by Indian pharmaceutical companies, which supply about 40 percent of the generic drugs sold in the U.S. Bureau investigators examined nearly 1,500 India-made drug samples collected from 22 cities and found that up to 10 percent of some medications contained insufficient levels of the key active ingredients — concentrations so low, in fact, that they would not be effective against the diseases they’re designed to treat.

This new research adds to a growing body of evidence that the generic drug industry, which supplies 85 percent of the drugs sold in the U.S., routinely violates basic quality control standards and ships sub-par medicines to the U.S. and other countries.

What that means is that many patients prescribed generic drugs are not only getting ripped off, but may be at risk because their medications are not treating the conditions they have, says renowned cardiologist Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

International regulators found more than 1,600 errors in 15 drug applications submitted by the Indian generic giant Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited. Officials noted that these pills were “potentially unsafe and illegal to sell.”

The findings come in the wake of a string of drug recalls of products made by Indian pharmaceutical companies. Some 100,000 bottles of the heart drug Toprol XL were recalled because they didn’t dissolve properly. The medication is a beta blocker taken by millions of Americans to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and sudden cardiac death.

In light of these developments, Dr. Crandall says patients need to talk to their doctors about the medications they are taking.

“There is a difference when we [use] generics and it can cost the patients his life,” he says. “So at all costs I would urge [patients] to pursue the name brand drug. I think we need to make our government officials aware of this. They are pushing you to inferior drugs and we need to get a revolution going to get these inferior drugs off the market.”

Antidepressants rapidly alter brain architecture, study finds Although advertising has downplayed or covered up the fact that antidepressants physically alter brain structure so that the person taking them becomes increasingly unable to function without them, a new study gives startling evidence of how rapidly that occurs.

“A single dose of a popular class of psychiatric drug used to treat depression can alter the brain’s architecture within hours, even though most patients usually don’t report improvement for weeks, a new study suggests.

More than 1 in 10 adults in the U.S. use these drugs, which adjust the availability of a chemical transmitter in the brain, serotonin, by blocking the way it is reabsorbed. The so-called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, or SSRIs, include Prozac, Lexapro, Celexa, Paxil and Zoloft.

[A] discovery in the late 1990s [showed] that low-frequency brain signaling during relative inactivity, such as daydreaming, is a good indicator of functional connectivity.

When more serotonin was available, this resting state functional connectivity decreased on a broad scale, the study found. This finding was not particularly surprising — other studies have shown a similar effect in brain regions strongly associated with mood regulation.

But there was a two-fold shock: Some areas of the brain appeared to buck the trend and become more interdependent. And all the changes were evident only three hours after the single dosage.”

“A recent video from the American Chemical Society purporting to debunk myths about the food additive monosodium glutamate (MSG) led to a slew of news stories — but that coverage failed to recognize that a subset of the population should avoid MSG.

The video contains two misleading facts. The first suggests MSG is considered “Generally Recognized as Safe,” or GRAS. The GRAS label for additives gives the appearance of safety; yet the term GRAS was simply given to food additives that were in use when the Food Additives Amendment of 1958 was established. The label effectively “grandfathered in” the additives so they could bypass premarket approval by the FDA (i.e., safety testing). Secondly, the video states that free glutamate occurs naturally in some foods. This is true; however, it does not mean that MSG is safe for everyone. People who are sensitive to MSG must also avoid foods with high amounts of naturally occurring free glutamate, such as soy sauce and Parmesan cheese.”

Blood test could indicate predisposition to suicide  Until now there has been no good way to discern which people are more likely to commit suicide when they’re depressed or under stress. But scientists at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine believe they have found a genetic mutation in those more likely to take their own lives and report that they can detect this mutation with a blood test.

If other studies confirm this finding, eventually it could be used to determine which people are more at risk and tailor their treatment to minimize the risk. This could include screening in order to avoid drugs which carry a higher risk for causing suicidal ideation, such as antidepressants.

“In cases where the people had died by suicide, there was a lower-than-normal concentration of a gene known as SKA2. It plays a part in the brain’s handling of stress hormones, and if it isn’t functioning properly or is lacking, stressful situations that would ordinarily be bearable can drive a person to contemplate or even attempt killing themselves.

It was also found that the mutation not only reduced the levels of the gene, but also added chemicals called methyl groups to the SKA2 that was present.

This finding was backed up by an analysis of blood samples taken from 325 living test subjects. Based on the levels of methyl groups in the SKA2 genes within those samples, the scientists could predict with 80 percent overall accuracy which of the participants had contemplated or attempted suicide. The accuracy went up to 90 percent for test subjects who posed a severe suicide risk, and 96 percent for the youngest group of participants.”

“Research from Journal of Biological Rhythms discovered that calcitriol, the activated form of vitamin D, modulated the expression of and synchronized two genes involved in the circadian rhythm in stem cells derived from fat tissue.

The circadian rhythm is an internal, entrainable biological process that predictably fluctuates over the course of 24 hours. It is involved in the sleeping and feeding patterns of animals, including humans.

Being internal means that it occurs in organisms despite any outside input. Being entrainable means that it can be reset by external influences. The circadian rhythm affects core body temperature, brain wave activity, hormone production, cell regeneration, and other biological activities.

Sunlight is a Zeitgeber which means “time giver” in German. A Zeitgeber is any external or environmental cue that entrains an organism’s biological rhythms to the Earth’s 24 hour light/dark cycle.

It is relatively known that the sun plays a major role in regulating the circadian rhythm in humans. This is one reason why night-shift workers have abnormal sleep schedules; they are not exposing themselves to the sun during the day which alters the reset of the circadian rhythm.

It is unknown, however, how the sun exactly entrains the circadian rhythm.

Therefore researchers from Mexico hypothesized that activated vitamin D may be mediating the effects of sunlight on biological rhythms.

Controlled trials in which researchers measure multiple biomarkers influenced by the circadian rhythm (such as testosterone, cortisol, melatonin) are needed to determine how vitamin D supplementation affects this process in humans.”

A number of recent studies have shown that gut bacteria can use these signals to alter the biochemistry of the brain. Compared with ordinary mice, those raised free of germs behave differently in a number of ways. They are more anxious, for example, and have impaired memory.

Some experiments suggest that bacteria also can influence the way their hosts eat. Germ-free mice develop more receptors for sweet flavors in their intestines, for example. They also prefer to drink sweeter drinks than normal mice do.

Dr. Maley and his colleagues argue that our eating habits create a strong motive for microbes to manipulate us. “From the microbe’s perspective, what we eat is a matter of life and death,” Dr. Maley said.

Different species of microbes thrive on different kinds of food. If they can prompt us to eat more of the food they depend on, they can multiply.

Microbial manipulations might fill in some of the puzzling holes in our understandings about food cravings, Dr. Maley said. Scientists have tried to explain food cravings as the body’s way to build up a supply of nutrients after deprivation, or as addictions, much like those for drugs like tobacco and cocaine.”

“A recent study conducted by researchers from RMIT university …found that an organic diet for just one week significantly reduced pesticide (commonly used in conventional food production) exposure in adults.

Thirteen participants were randomly selected to consume a diet consisting of at least 80% organic or conventional food for precisely 7 days, afterwards crossing over to the alternative diet from which they started. The study found that urinary dialkylphosphates (DAPs) measurements were 89% lower when they ate an organic diet for seven days compared to a conventional diet for the same amount of time.

“A lot of these agents were initially developed as nerve gases for chemical warfare, so we do know that they have toxic effects on the nervous system at high doses. Conventional food production commonly uses organophosphate pesticides, which are neurotoxins that act on the nervous system of humans by blocking an important enzyme. Recent studies have raised concerns for health effects of these chemicals even at relatively low levels. This study is an important first step in expanding our understanding about the impact of an organic diet.”

“Artificial sweeteners may do more harm than good, when it comes to diabetes. New research shows fake sugars in diet soda, yogurt, and other foods consumed by millions can raise the blood sugar level instead of reducing it.
The findings, based on experiments involving mice and people, indicate zero-calorie sweeteners such as saccharin, sucralose, and aspartame can alter the population of gut bacteria and trigger unwanted changes such as higher blood glucose levels — a risk factor for diabetes, the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The scope of our discovery is cause for a public reassessment of the massive and unsupervised use of artificial sweeteners,” said Eran Elinav, a physician and immunologist at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science and lead author of the study, which appeared in the journal Nature.”

The Healing Properties of Unrefined Salts

This extensive article from “Allergies and Your Gut” is actually a compilation of several articles that each relate to salt in some way. As a result it is lengthy, but it is packed with interesting and useful information. It’s one of those articles that will cause you to change the habits of a lifetime as soon as you read it, because the change in the type of salt you purchase isn’t difficult or expensive and the benefits are so overwhelming. It first gives a history of salt which is interesting reading, though it’s not necessary to gain an understanding of the health benefits and requirements of the human body for salt.

That is followed by a section on “What’s Wrong With Processed Table Salt” which is what we’ll focus on in this post. Following sections focus on the benefits of unrefined sea salt and various natural types of salt which are available commercially such as Himalayan Pink, Celtic Sea Salt, Maldon Salt, Alaea or Hawaiian Red Sea Salt and Black Lava Sea Salt. As is apparent from the names, salt can come in almost any color – clear, pink, red, blue, black and yellow.

Originally salt contained many minerals necessary for proper functioning of the body. The table salt sold today does not contain these minerals. Minerals also used to be obtained from the soil through foods grown there, but in recent decades that source is all but gone, since the soil became depleted of such nutrients long ago. That’s one reason why the refining of table salt is so problematic. In processing desiccants (anti-caking agents) also are added so that it doesn’t clump together once it’s packaged.

There have been a great many news reports and much medical advice to Americans to limit the amount of salt in their diets, since it has been blamed for many modern health problems such as high blood pressure. But it is the refining process that’s responsible for the problems, not the salt itself. In fact, salt is a crucial element for life. The human body is composed primarily of water and salt, and the body’s potassium/salt exchange is vital for correct heart functioning.

“It’s soaked in a solution which may contain sulfuric acid or chlorine and various bleaches. Then it’s heated to a temperature that removes all the minerals and other trace elements that our bodies need to function. Some processed salts are then spray coated with iodine.

Processed table salt is quite different from natural, unrefined salts. It no longer has the ability to combine with our body fluids, so undermines necessary, basic chemical and metabolic processes. Water retention, kidney and blood pressure problems, gall stones, and many other serious health problems can result from refined salt consumption.

On average, Americans consume more than 3,400 mg of refined salt per day. Of this amount, about 75% is derived from processed food. The other 25% comes from sources such as water treatment and medications.
When salt is chemically cleaned and processed, the trace minerals and electrolytes that naturally occur in unrefined salt are removed as if they were impurities.

Chemically processed table salt is inorganic, which means that the chemical bonds are so strong they can’t easily be broken down or metabolized by our bodies. When you take in an inorganic mineral, your body will either store it or eliminate it. In this case, when you take in table salt your body sees it as a poison and tries to get rid of it as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, most of us take in way more table salt than our bodies can eliminate. When this happens, the body has to do something with the excess salt.

Consuming a lot of chemically processed table salt makes us feel thirsty. That’s because the body has been put into a tough position. It can’t get rid of the table salt fast enough so it must neutralize it. To do that it takes water from healthy cells to surround this salt. As a result, you retain water and kill off healthy cells.”

In addition, spraying refined salt with iodine means that we often get a toxic build-up of iodine in the thyroid, which can cause metabolism and immune disorders. Just as with refined salt, the added iodine is not in a form that is immediately useable by the body. Refined table salt is disastrous because though it claims to provide two nutrients crucial for the body, sodium and iodine, in effect, it is not providing much of either in any useable form.

An international team found that study participants who were severely vitamin D deficient were more than twice as likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.”

2 Cruciferous Vegetables Make It Possible to Absorb Vitamin D  Whether we’re eating lots of foods rich in vitamin D, spending time outdoors or taking a supplement, it still doesn’t mean we’re getting enough vitamin D if we can’t absorb it into our cells. If it isn’t absorbed, we can’t use it. To have that vitamin D biologically active inside us, the vitamin D must be received by “vitamin D receptors”.

“A specific gene called the VDR (vitamin D receptor) gene codes for this receptor.

Unfortunately, sick and unhealthy cells express less of the VDR gene, meaning that they are unable to accept and use vitamin D. Supplementing with more vitamin D won’t help these sick cells. Without a receptor site, vitamin D has nowhere to go.

Broccoli and cabbage contain a very special molecule called sulforaphane.

Research shows that sulforaphane increases the expression of the VDR gene.

In other words, the sulforaphane that we find in cruciferous vegetables and herbs like wasabi helps the body absorb more vitamin D—improving bone mass, as well as the ability to fight infection, cancer, and inflammation.

If you have cramping intestinal pain, bloating, or gas after munching on raw cabbage, this is a sign that you cannot tolerate raw, unfermented cruciferous vegetables.”

For people with this problem, you can either culture your veggies by purchasing a culture starter or ferment them yourself. Cabbage, made into sauerkraut, is one of the most beneficial things you can eat because it contains an enormous number of good bacteria (probiotics). New Study Links GMOs To Cancer, Liver/Kidney Damage & Severe Hormonal Disruption

“In November 2012, the Journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology published a paper titled Long Term Toxicity of Roundup Herbicide and a Roundup-Tolerant genetically modified maize by Gilles-Eric Seralini and his team of researchers at France’s Caen University. (source) It was a very significant study that made a lot of noise worldwide, the first of its kind under controlled conditions that examined the possible effects of a GMO maize diet treated with Monsanto’s Roundup Herbicide.

The study found severe liver and kidney damage as well as hormonal disturbances in rats fed with GM maize in conjunction with low levels of Roundup that were below those permitted in most drinking water across Europe. Results also indicated high rates of large tumors and mortality in most treatment groups.

The republished study also has a section describing the lobbying efforts of GMO crop supporters to force the retraction of the original publication. This is scientific fraud at its best. The authors express how the previous retraction was “a historic example of conflicts of interest in the scientific assessments of products commercialized worldwide.”

There were 10 significant findings from the study. These are:

How to Tell GMO Foods from Organic or Conventionally Grown  It has been estimated that 80% of all processed food in the US contains GMOs, food that has been altered at a genetic level in a laboratory. Plants, foods, even animals and fish all have been altered in this manner in recent years. For example, a new strawberry type said to be frost tolerant, has been created by insertion of a gene from “a cold ocean dwelling fish”. Does that sound like something you’d want to eat?

“According to government statements testing has been done on these so-called “Franken-foods” and they were found to be “substantially equivalent” to the original food.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has shown that consumption of GMO foods are linked to genetic problems with: Insulin control, cholesterol, protein formation, and cell signaling, changes in the kidney, liver, spleen and gastrointestinal system, accelerated aging, a weakened immune system and even infertility.

It can be difficult to know how to avoid GMO foods. There is no government standard on labeling and companies are not required to tell you if the products they’re selling you contain them.

So how can you avoid GMO foods and not eat foods spliced with random genes?  There are ways. First you can look for PLU codes.  It’s okay, I didn’t know what they were either.  It stands for Price look-up codes.

The next time you’re in the grocery store pick up a piece of fruit. There’s a good chance it has a sticker on it with a four or five digit number on it. If it has five numbers look closer.

Requirements by the International Federation for Produce Standards require that the first number be a ‘9’ if the item is organic and ‘8’ if it’s a GMO. Nine is just fine but hate the eight.

I’ve been most careful in buying only the “ugly heirloom” tomatoes sold at Walmart, among other places, because genetic modification of tomatoes was one of the first we were warned about. But in reading this recent article, I learned that GMO tomatoes aren’t around much anymore. Did the companies producing them suddenly become concerned about public health? Or did the government finally regulate them out of existence? No to both of those questions. However, tomatoes (and potatoes), once both a health concern, aren’t being produced much in GMO varieties because they didn’t ship or store well. For that reason, fast food chains refused to purchase them so production of them has been discontinued. Profit. “Researchers say ancestral exposures to the pesticide methoxychlor may lead to adult onset kidney disease, ovarian disease and obesity in future generations.

“What your great-grandmother was exposed to during pregnancy, like the pesticide methoxychlor, may promote a dramatic increase in your susceptibility to develop disease, and you will pass this on to your grandchildren in the absence of any continued exposures,” says Michael Skinner, WSU professor and founder of its Center for Reproductive Biology.

Methoxychlor — also known as Chemform, Methoxo, Metox or Moxie — was introduced in 1948 and widely used during the 1970s as a safer replacement for DDT. It was used on crops, ornamental plants, livestock and pets. It is still used in many countries around the world.

It was banned in the U.S. in 2003 due to its toxicity and ability to disrupt endocrine systems. Methoxychlor can behave like the hormone estrogen and profoundly affects the reproductive system.”

“Groundbreaking results were achieved in a clinical trial using hookworms to reduce the symptoms of celiac disease. The results are good news for sufferers of other inflammatory conditions such as asthma and Crohn’s disease. In the small trial run over a year, 12 participants were each experimentally infected with 20 Necator americanus (hookworm) larvae. They were then given gradually increasing doses of gluten, with their daily dose in the final stage being equivalent to a medium-sized bowl of spaghetti.

Significantly, all the trial subjects rejected the researchers’ offer of drugs that would eliminate the hookworms. “They all chose to keep their worms, and they continue to report good health. However they were instructed to return to a gluten-free diet after the trial,” Professor Loukas said.

The potential of helminths (parasitic worms) in treating inflammatory diseases lies in their ability to dial back the human immune response — a skill that enables them to survive, and thrive, in the human gut, without compromising their host’s ability to fight off other infectious diseases.”

“Australian researchers have found that hookworms can be used to reduce the symptoms of celiac disease, as well as other inflammatory conditions such as asthma and Crohn’s.

Two-third of the participants in the study were able to increase their gluten tolerance by a factor of 60, said Alex Loukas, head of the Centre for Biodiscovery and Molecular Development of Therapeutics at JCU.

“We and others have had promising results in earlier trials but this is clear proof-of-principle of the benefits of hookworm in treating inflammatory disease,” said Loukas.

“This trial has confirmed hookworms as our choice of parasite for clinical applications,” said Loukas. “But despite our growing fondness for them, we do acknowledge that a protein pill will have broader market appeal than a dose of worms.”

Optimal Sleep Time Is 7 to 8 Hours: Study 

“Adults who say they sleep between seven and eight hours per night miss fewer work days due to sickness than others, according to a Finnish study.

The researchers calculate that if insomnia, apnea and other kinds of sleep disturbances were eliminated, the total cost of worker sick days could be cut by 28 percent.

“Our ability to sustain attention and maintain peak cognitive performance is significantly reduced if we are sleep deprived over longer periods….”

“Those sleeping 5 hours or less or 10 hours or more were absent from work 5 to 9 days more each year, as compared to those with optimal sleep,” Lallukka said.

Lallukka noted that individual sleep needs may vary, and one person should not necessarily apply the results of the population-level observational study to their day-to-day routine.”

How Much Do Dogs Sleep?  The answer to that question will depend on several factors: the age of the dog, the breed, the activity level (ordinary house pet versus service dog) level of boredom and interruptions. An average dog will sleep half of his life, roughly 12 hours daily, though some breeds sleep up to 18 hours each day; like people, some dogs love to sleep more than others do. The video, below, is a good example. An older dog will sleep more, and the more noise around your house, the more your pet’s sleep is interrupted. Although they have 2 sleep cycles just like humans, they often sleep in bursts so they are up and awake when there’s activity going on. They’d never want to miss a chance for a walk or a game by sleeping!

Now think about your house and being a dog trying to sleep while everyone is making noise. One way to ensure your best friend has the best sleep possible, is to make sure they have comfortable sleeping conditions. When preparing an area for your dog to sleep and rest, simply think about what you would like to have, and they will appreciate you that much more.”

Most Americans are suffering from a deficiency of Vitamin D

Experts have warned against sun exposure for many years and that has led to a tremendous increase in both the number of people wearing sunscreen and in the amount of sunscreen they use. While that may have health benefits in certain areas, it also has contributed to a deficiency in vitamin D3, probably the most essential vitamin there is for overall health.

Almost our entire elderly population (95%) is deficient in this essential vitamin, and as much as 50% of the general American population suffers from deficiency as well. Worldwide that number rises to 75%. Given how many areas of our bodies utilize vitamin D3 and how profound are the effects of a deficiency, this is cause for concern.

With numbers this high, the wise move would be to have your levels tested. While the only way to get a completely accurate reading is through blood tests, that shouldn’t deter you from trying to assess whether you have sufficient levels. The Science of the Midnight Snack: Why the body craves junk food late at night  A recent study reveals that people crave fatty foods and sugars from 12 midnight to 4 a.m. It appears we’re “hard wired” for junk food cravings at night because the body demands lots of calories at that hour for an energy boost. The most popular items are ice cream, pound cake and French fries, according to a study of volunteers, published in the journal Obesity.

“Regardless of when they’d woken up, when they’d last eaten, and how much they’d eaten that day, the volunteers were hungriest at night. And while their desire for vegetables stayed more or less the same throughout the day, their hunger for sweet, salty, and starchy foods increased dramatically around 8 p.m.—suggesting that our appetite for junk is governed more by our internal body clocks than by genuine hunger.

One reason for this is fluctuation in the hormone cortisol, which tells the liver to release sugar into the blood. Because we don’t need as much energy at night, cortisol levels decrease, telling our bodies that it’s time to go to sleep—when we stay awake, though, we’re driven to compensate for the resulting blood-sugar drop by eating food. But what’s bad for our modern-day waistlines may have had an evolutionary benefit, said the authors of the Obesity study: Because the body burns fewer calories at night, the urge to consume more of them in later hours may have helped our ancestors stay nourished when food was scarce.

Another reason may be that end-of-day fatigue increases the temptation to indulge. When we’re tired, we make less of the hormone leptin, which brings on a satiated feeling, and more of the hunger hormone ghrelin. As a result, our sleepy brains pull a few tricks to nudge our bodies towards energy pick-me-ups in the form of calories. In one 2012 study, researchers found that when people were sleep-deprived, the reward centers of their brains lit up more when they looked at pictures of junk foods than when they saw pictures of healthy foods (in well-rested people, the brain response was roughly the same for both food groups).”

Waistlines of Americans continue to grow by the year, and more women suffer from a fast size rise than do men, new government research shows. Data from roughly 33,000 people were examined in the study. Forget the old standard of 36-24-36, the average woman’s waistline is 38.8 inches, with more than an inch and a half increase between 1999 and 2012. Anything over 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men is considered obese, with abdominal fat a risk factor in heart disease and diabetes.

While researchers say they don’t know why women are expanding more rapidly than men or why waistlines are expanding at all when obesity seems to have leveled off, we have some theories of our own and they center around diet. The prevelance of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) and soy (which has effects similar to taking estrogen) are two possible reasons. See our last post for information about the increasing use of HFCS. it is now in almost all processed foods and turns immediately to fat in the body. Just check the label for ingredients.

Waist circumference is a simple tool that reflects the amount of total body fat and intra-abdominal body fat. Like body mass index (BMI), which is a calculation based on height to weight, it is used to predict heart disease risk.

No single reason for the bulking up stood out. But the researchers speculated that sleep disruption, certain medications and everyday chemicals known to be endocrine disruptors may possibly play a role.

“Older adults who habitually use sedatives for anxiety or insomnia may have a heightened risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a new study suggests.

The drugs in question are benzodiazepines, a widely prescribed group of sedatives that include lorazepam (Ativan), diazepam (Valium) and alprazolam (Xanax). Older adults commonly take the drugs for anxiety or insomnia, often long-term, according to background information in the study.

That’s despite the fact that guidelines call for only short-term use of the drugs, at most. In 2012, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) put benzodiazepines on its list of drugs considered “potentially inappropriate” for seniors, because of risks like confusion, dizziness and falls.

The current study isn’t the first to link benzodiazepines to Alzheimer’s risk, but it adds to evidence that longer-term use of the drugs — beyond three months — might be a risk factor….”

Dogs feel jealousy and seek attention just like humans  People attributing human emotions to their pets have long been criticized for making anthropomorphic claims. They’ll often hear statements like, “It’s only a dog; it can’t feel anything like that.” But after studying 36 dogs via videotape in their owners’ homes, researchers found jealousy was apparent in response to being ignored by owners. The study provided owners with three triggers to test emotional reaction. The triggers were “an animated stuffed dog that barked and wagged its tail, a jack-o-lantern and a pop-up children’s book that played melodies.”

The dogs responded to the fake dog more often than to the other items, displaying clear signs of jealousy, including strong distress that a rival was usurping “a loved one’s attention.” They used a variety of methods to regain the attention of their owners and repair the relationship.

“Jealousy is very much considered a complex, social-structured human trait; however, anyone that has a pet will likely tell you about a time when that pet acted jealous.

…Dogs were twice as likely to try to push or touch their owner while they played with the fake dog. One-third of the dogs tried to insert themselves between the owner and the animated dog, and one-quarter snapped at the fake dog. One dog reacted aggressively to both the jack-o-lantern and the pop-up book.

In regard to the dogs that didn’t show jealousy, “It’s possible these are not very bright dogs, who didn’t even realize these items were something to be jealous over, or maybe they were very bright dogs who were not fooled by these inanimate objects. Another possibility is that the bond may not have been very strong with the owner.”

This is the most crucial information I’ve come across. I’ve changed my dietary habits to consume coconut oil daily, I’ve added certain vitamins such as 10,000 daily units of D3 made only from lanolin, and I’ve even added supplements for my dog. But nothing has come close to the importance of the information and the change to my life that this lead report has instigated.

I recently had a propane leak, which necessitated shutting down my stove until repairs are completed. During this time I have used my microwave even for tea, because it was the only way to heat anything, including water. But once I read this article, I unplugged the microwave and I’ve resorted to bottled tea and coffee, along with carry out food.

That doesn’t completely protect me from microwave danger, (despite Gordon Ramsay’s campaign to convince restaurants that the cardboard taste the ovens produce are largely responsible for the failure of so many new eating establishments) since most restaurants use them in conjunction with packaged, processed, chemicalized food  But even my take away has consisted of things unlikely to be cooked in that manner. I’ve been that careful since I was made aware of the dangers. That should provide some indication of how much I found that not only disturbed me. but downright frightened me into immediately discontinuing the use of mine, despite the present inconvenience.

Two facts from the report made me think twice, even before I learned of the dangerous effects on health. First, the Nazis were the ones who discovered microwaves could be used for cooking and who produced the first ovens for “convenience”. Second, after bringing home a large amount of records relating to the testing of these new marvels, along with some of the ovens themselves, the Soviets totally outlawed them in 1976.

Our own government found the same, but instead of outlawing them like the Soviets did,  the ovens were heavily promoted to consumers as we were told they were safe. Recently our government has found even more uses for microwaves, some involving cell towers. Given their secrecy on these new microwave uses, learning about the hidden reports after WWII didn’t really surprise me though.

Radiation Ovens: The Proven Dangers of Microwaves  While parts of this report are fairly technical in explaining what microwaves are and how they work, in general it is an important one to read because it provides crucial info that we’re not being given elsewhere. There have been a few published reports and studies which warn consumers never to heat a baby bottle in a microwave, for instance. Although they cite dangers like having the baby scalded or having the bottle explode, the reports also note that the chemicals used to make formula are changed by the microwave process until they create toxins which can be deadly. If the waves change the chemicals in formula to that extent, of course they will do the same thing to the chemicals found in any processed food.

Blood for transfusions no longer is warmed in microwaves because of a lawsuit over the death of a patient who died from a transfusion of “heated” blood, which no longer was compatible with the human body. In general, microwaves weaken cell membranes, making them susceptible to fungi, infections, viruses and other microorganisms. Cells in people who consumed microwaved food and drink produced the poisons hydrogen peroxide and carbon monoxide as waste instead of carbon dioxide and water as they are supposed to.

In addition, virtually all microwaves leak, despite assurances that they seal tightly to protect us from radiation. Numerous studies have found greatly increased cancer rates through regular ingestion of microwaved food and virtually all food, once microwaved, contained carcinogens. And if this isn’t enough, microwaving destroys the nutrient value of food, despite claims that it is different from irradiating.

The article asks some basic questions that we all should have asked long before now:

Is it possible that millions of people are ignorantly sacrificing their health in exchange for the convenience of microwave ovens? Why did the Soviet Union ban the use of microwave ovens in 1976? Who invented microwave ovens, and why? The answers to these questions may shock you into throwing your microwave oven in the trash.

In general, people believe that whatever a microwave oven does to foods cooked in it doesn’t have any negative effect on either the food or them. Of course, if microwave ovens were really harmful, our government would never allow them on the market, would they? Would they?

The purpose of this report is to show proof – evidence – that microwave cooking is not natural, nor healthy, and is far more dangerous to the human body than anyone could imagine. However, the microwave oven manufacturers, Washington City politics, and plain old human nature are suppressing the facts and evidence.

Radiation causes ionization, which is what occurs when a neutral atom gains or loses electrons. In simpler terms, a microwave oven decays and changes the molecular structure of the food by the process of radiation. Had the manufacturers accurately called them “radiation ovens”, it’s doubtful they would have ever sold one, but that’s exactly what a microwave oven is.

One short-term study found significant and disturbing changes in the blood of individuals consuming microwaved milk and vegetables. Eight volunteers ate various combinations of the same foods cooked different ways. All foods that were processed through the microwave ovens caused changes in the blood of the volunteers. Hemoglobin levels decreased and over all white cell levels and cholesterol levels increased. Lymphocytes decreased.

Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup  Most of the soft drinks and juices produced contain high fructose corn syrup. In fact, use of this product has increased until it comprises 40% of sweetener used today. But it’s not just used in drinks. If you read labels, you’ll be astounded at the foods which contain HFCS. Bakery goods, canned fruits, and typically sweet products like jams, pancake syrup and candy. But what’s astounding is how many products that aren’t sweet contain it. Items like condiments, sauces, dressings, breads, dairy products and many others suddenly contain this ubiquitous ingredient.

Manufacturers use it because it’s 2.3 times sweeter than sugar and it costs much less to make. But if you think that it doesn’t make much difference to you which they use as long as things taste good and are less expensive, think again. It is costing you far more than you know.

Sugar causes the body to create insulin which allows cells to use the glucose for energy. But HFCS has more fructose (even the name, high fructose corn syrup is a giveaway to the difference) which the body can’t process for energy, so instead it stores this as fat. Eating products with HFCS is akin to padding your body with extra fat every time you eat.

Another difference between glucose and fructose is in their affect on appetite. Glucose causes us to release chemicals that tell us we’re satisfied; fructose does not. Because of that we never get the signal that we’re full when we eat products with HFCS so we continue to be hungry and to eat without restraint.

HFCS is made from genetically modified organisms as well, (GMOs) which have deleterious effects on the human body. It was developed “40 years ago as a cheaper, sweeter substitute for sugar. Human beings simply don’t have the tools to convert HFCS into usable energy.” It was created with profit, not health, in mind. This substance is directly responsible for the epidemic of obesity which is overtaking the country.

For the sake of your waistline as well as your health, begin to check ingredients carefully if you don’t already do so. Resolve to buy items that don’t contain this substance. If that isn’t feasible, then limit your use of that particular item as much as possible. It’s getting more difficult by the week to find foods without HFCS, but it’s worth the extra effort to avoid it as much as you can.

How To Build a Strong Immune System  This is so good and comprehensive that I was tempted to copy almost all of the article. But rather than do that, I’ll just recommend that you take time to not only look at this page, but to learn what’s on some of the lists on it. Specifically, the most common toxins that we need to avoid to stay healthy is one such list. “Because of the lower reimbursement rates, some insurance industry officials began calling the ObamaCare exchange plans Medicaid-plus at the time when they debuted in the marketplaces or exchanges….” Manning says this is especially a problem for private practices.“Doctors who work in larger provider groups or hospital settings may not notice this as acutely as doctors who own their own private practices, because those physicians are also operating as small businessmen,” she says. “So they see the backside of this equation. When ObamaCare limits the ability of insurance companies to rate their products according to risk, those insurance companies have to do something else to balance out the equation.”

Studies have found that one-third of all antibiotics dispensed in this country are “unnecessary or inappropriate.” If the trend continues, we may eventually live in a world where antibiotics no longer stop infection, a world similar to the one that existed before antibiotics were discovered.

Even though Congress has passed incentives for drug companies to develop new types of antibiotics, the industry is not following through because it runs on a profit model, and antibiotics cure people. They prefer to develop and market drugs that are needed for chronic conditions, where the consumer will use a drug long-term.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that the government needs to take immediate action before we live in a world where life-saving antibiotics are no longer effective.

“Every day we delay it becomes harder and more expensive to fix this problem,” said CDC Director Thomas Frieden Tuesday.

Frieden says the healthcare system needs to improve how it detects patients with drug-resistant infections, controls the spread of such infections, prevents them from happening in the first place and incentivizes drugmakers to develop new antibiotics.

“We talk about the pre-antibiotic era and the antibiotic era; if we’re not careful we will soon be in the post-antibiotic era,” he said. “And, in fact, for some patients and some pathogens we’re already there.

”The CDC is launching a new system this week that lets hospitals track all the antibiotics dispensed and look at real-time patterns of antibiotic resistance, so doctors can narrow down which antibiotics are most likely to work.

Frieden warns that 23,000 Americans die from drug-resistant infections annually.”

Doctor Claims That Dogs Understand What Humans Say To Them

Dr. Greg Berns of Emory University wants to prove that a dog really does understand what its owner is saying to them.

“The more I study dogs and the more I study their brains, the more similarities I see to human brains,” Berns told WGCL-TV. “They are intelligent, they are emotional, and they’ve been ignored in terms of research and understanding how they think. Berns uses an MRI to test a dog’s brain.

“So, we’ve done experiments where we present odors to the dogs and these are things like the scent of other people in their house, the scent of other dogs in the house, as well as strange people and strange dogs,” Berns said. “And so what we found in that experiment is that the dogs reward processing center, so basically the part of the brain that is kind of the positive anticipation of things responds particularly strongly to the scent of their human.”

“Currently, we are trying to understand what dogs perceive about the world,” Berns told WGCL. “You know, what do they see when they see humans, dogs, other animals, cars, etc.”

“Age-related declines in intelligence are strongly related to declines on a very simple task of visual perception speed, researchers report in Cell Press journal Current Biology (open access) on August 4.

The evidence comes from experiments in which researchers showed 600 healthy older people very brief flashes of one of two shapes on a screen and measured the time it took each of them to reliably tell one from the other.

“As this basic ability declines with age, so too does intelligence. The typical person who has better-preserved complex thinking skills in older age tends to be someone who can accumulate information quickly from a fleeting glance.”

Previous studies had shown that smarter people, as measured by standard IQ tests, tend to be better at discerning the difference between two briefly presented shapes….

The results provide evidence that the slowing of simple, visual decision-making processes might be part of what underlies declines in the complex decision making that we recognize as general intelligence.”

Mixed in with interesting facts like only female mosquitoes bite, or bug lights are ineffective for mosquitoes, is an attempt at reassuring the public about wearing pesticide as a repellant.

“The best bets for mosquito protection, he said, are repellents registered with the Environmental Protection Agency as pesticides. Registration ensures a regulated level of safety, testing and effectiveness. Consumers should check for an EPA registration number on the label of insect repellents.

Based on extensive toxicity testing, the EPA recently concluded that the normal use of Deet does not present a health concern to the general population. There had been reports that Deet could cause skin and central nervous system problems when applied directly to the skin. The experts recommend using Deet because of its high effectiveness, but using products that contain smaller concentrations of Deet — 20 percent to 30 percent — and applying the repellent to clothing rather than directly to skin.”

Does this sound as much like doubletalk to you as it does to me? Why put it on clothing instead of skin if it’s safe? And pesticides that need registered with the EPA because they’re dangerous may be fine for use in swamp areas or somewhere that the health risks of mosquitoes outweigh the danger to people from use of the chemicals, but the human body isn’t one of those areas.

Other interesting facts? Wearing dark clothing will cause more bites because you’ll sweat more in dark clothes since they absorb sunlight, and mosquitoes are attracted to body odor.

Video: Walmart-brand ice cream sandwich won’t melt in 80 degree heat  This is another test of Walmart Great Value “ice cream sandwiches” and the fact that they don’t melt – despite 24 hours on a counter in the Weather Channel video. But Walmart has an explanation. They claim that ice cream with higher amounts of cream take longer to melt. Over twenty-four hours? Isn’t that a bit ridiculous as an explanation? But on to the second test:

“Dan puts the sammy on a plate in the sun, and a highly scientific clip-art image tells us that the temperature is 78 degrees. 20 minutes later, the temperature has risen to 80 degrees and the dessert is still 95% in-tact. There’s a little bit of bowing around the edges of the white, frothy “ice cream” filling, but overall this thing appears to have been engineered in a military research lab.

35 minutes into the experiment, Dan compares the Walmart sandwich to a scoop of Blue Bunny ice cream that has melting into a puddle on its plate. It really is a testament to the “Great Value” of this cookie-cream concoction — why pay for ice cream that doesn’t last two minutes when you can have a Twinkie-grade treat that will last for years in your backyard time capsule?

After the full hour, some clear, undetermined moisture has begun to seep out of the bowels of the “ice cream,” and Dan seems satisfied that his hypothesis has been proven correct.

This report is from my home area of western Pennsylvania, though there may be similar stories wherever the polar vortex was felt last winter. And with so much coming out about what’s bad, from GMO food to microwaves to cell phones, it seemed time to celebrate some good news, especially when it results from an event we view as undesirable. Most Americans believe the FDA is there to protect them from quack remedies, dangerous foods and risky pharmaceuticals. Their primary duty is supposed to be toward the consumers who can’t protect themselves from deceptive claims and dangerous substances in food or medications. But does it really work that way? Are they looking out for Americans’ health before anything else?

There is one major problem with how the system is set up. The FDA, like any other government agency, has as its primary mission its own survival. Budget cuts can threaten the jobs of workers at the agency, so the most crucial aspect of their existence is ensuring that they remain funded. Unfortunately, the way it is structured currently, much of their operating budget comes from fees paid by drug companies during the drug approval process. That automatically gives the agency a bias toward those who are, in effect, paying their salaries.

When it comes to a choice between Big Pharma and average consumers, who do you think gets the most protection? And if drug companies are worried about shrinking profits as their patents on certain drugs expire, what better way to retain profits than to take generally used substances, especially those everyone needs for life, and get the FDA to declare them to be drugs, subject to the approval process. That limits their future availability to the market and essentially grants a patent to a drug manufacturer for that substance. It’s bad enough when a supplement or food is helpful for certain conditions, but when it is necessary to maintain life, the drug company has a captive consumer base.

That is what’s happening more and more at the FDA, as funding is cut further each year. Below are articles discussing this trend and focusing on specific tricks that are being used to keep vital information from the public (such as the health benefits of cherries) and to grant exclusive rights to necessary nutrients (like two separate B vitamins) to drug manufacturers, in order to maintain their profit levels. There are links for you to complain to the FDA about this practice, and to weigh in on proposals for those two B vitamins before they are removed from over the counter and made into drugs requiring a prescription. This affects us all, so we hope you’ll take action with us and let the FDA know Americans are watching them closely.

Whom Does the FDA Work For? This article focuses on colchicine, the active compound in an herbal healer which relieved back pain for 92% of those who tried it. It also was effective in treating gout, but it now has been banned by the FDA so that a pharmaceutical company could make a patented copycat drug. Even if you have neither of these ailments, this article is very important because it exemplifies what is happening across the board to remedies that have been safely used for a hundred years or more. It also contains information on their plan to limit vitamin B6 or P5P because of a drug company proposal.

Increasingly, the FDA is banning natural supplements to make way for drug manufacturers, who don’t realize enough profit once their patents expire. To offset that, they’re turning to natural substances and combining them with other drugs or making patentable formulations of the natural remedies, meaning they have the exclusive right to distribute what once were cheap, effective remedies. As a result, the cost for these remedies are going through the roof, making them unaffordable for some users.

This has forced some users into a subsidized drug program, which means that while drug companies still make their profits, that profit comes from taxpayers. The cost of colchicine has risen from $.09 per pill to $4.85 per pill because of this move. As a practical matter, that means the monthly cost for an average user has risen from $6 to $300. Aside from that, combining these supplements with other drugs means users must take drugs which may be unnecessary to get the original substance.

The article also points to foods formerly considered as such and the rush to reclassify them as drugs for the same purpose. 

“For example, cherries and cherry extract have also been found to be a remarkably effective treatment for gout, among other inflammatory conditions. But when cherry marketers and growers cited peer-reviewed scientific research on the health benefits of cherries—FDA shut them down, insisting that this made cherries a drug.

A 1999 peer-reviewed report in the Journal of Natural Products published by the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society, concluded that tart cherries may relieve pain better than aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs. Other research also indicates that a diet rich in cherries reduces total cholesterol by 11%.

When cherry growers began to cite the scientific research, the FDA sent a warning letter to twenty-nine companies that market cherries, threatening regulatory action if they did not remove the scientific information regarding the anti-inflammatory properties of cherries from their websites. The FDA declared cherries had become “drugs” once health claims for a disease were associated with the product. If producers wanted to make health claims, they would have to take cherries through the drug approval process, at vast cost, and with no potential return, since the product could not be patented.”

This is occurring with increasing frequency because much of the FDA’s budget comes directly from drug manufacturers through the drug approval process, so they are protecting the claims and the profits of those manufacturers, regardless of the hardship this causes consumers. Forty percent of their budget is from this source which pits the agency directly against the consumers they’re supposed to protect.

The drug industry has been using a number of strategies to retain their profits including this FDA connection. These include paying other companies to prevent them from making generic alternatives, pushing newer drugs which offer the same benefit as older drugs and reverse payments.

That’s why these three articles on the FDA are so important. All relate to forms of vitamin B which are absolutely necessary for life and which are currently available as low cost supplements. The FDA has plans to remove both vitamin B6 (P5P) and folate from the market, and license them to drug manufacturers for use in proprietary formulas. That would take them out of reach of everyone who needs these vitamins, and that means all of us.

Vitamin B6 (P5P)  This is a brief update to the article above, discussing the plan to remove B6 (P5P) from the marketplace.

“Human beings cannot live without vitamin B-6. It is also important for the prevention of cancer and the prevention and treatment of seizures, anemia, mental disorders including schizophrenia, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other conditions. Its effect on carpal tunnel can seem almost miraculous.

A natural form of the vitamin, Pyridoxamine, was recently yanked off the market by the FDA. Why? Because a pharmaceutical company, BioStratum, wanted sole use of pyridoxamine in a drug, a drug which may or may not ever appear. The company filed a so-called citizens petition and the FDA agreed, notwithstanding protests from ANH-USA, other organizations, and thousands of citizens. You might ask: how can Pharma take a supplement off the market and claim exclusive use of it as a prescription drug? The FDA does not presently feel obligated to answer this question.

Unfortunately, this isn’t all the bad news about vitamin B6. All forms of B-6, natural or synthetic, must be converted to P5P, another natural form, for the body to use it.

Another drug company, Medicure Pharma, wants sole use of P5P and so has petitioned the FDA to ban its use as a supplement as well.

Medicure has yet to market a drug made from P5P, but wants the ban to take place now. And never mind that any individual unable to convert synthetic B6 to P5P would have to rely solely on Medicure’s product to stay alive.

The FDA has not yet responded to Medicure’s petition. We have asked you in the past to send a message to the FDA and Congress protesting Medicure’s P5P grab, and the time has come to send some more messages. The SSRI/Folate Connection: Why Big Pharma May Want to Monopolize the B Vitamin You Can’t Live Without

Much of the population benefits from taking folate—as distinguished from folic acid—in dietary supplements. There are two key things to bear in mind: how much dietary folate you consume, and how much active folate you have available.

If most of your folate is coming from folic acid supplements rather than from food, you may still be gravely folate deficient because of the big variations in how efficiently folic acid is converted to the bioactive form in different people…. Unmetabolized folic acid, as it turns out, is an emerging risk factor linked to increased risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Researchers have also found a strong link between folate deficiency and depression. This is particularly interesting when you consider research showing that 70% of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) carry the MTHFR mutation.

Taking an old drug, combining it with another ingredient, and convincing the FDA to grant a monopoly on the “new” combo drug is a well-known Pharma trick….

It will in effect ban the natural B vitamin folate and require supplement producers to use only the synthetic, oxidized form of folate, folic acid. Watercress gets perfect score of 100 in study that ranks foods by nutrient levels  In a study that examined overall levels of key nutrients, watercress took the number one place among healthy fruits and vegetables. Rather than examining the foods for high levels of a specific nutrient, the study looked at levels of all nutrients important for health found in each fruit or vegetable. The study rated levels of “folate, vitamin D, vitamin A, potassium and protein, based on the assumption of a 2,000-calorie per day diet, and took into consideration the daily requirements of such nutrients.”

Physicians seeing increase in brown recluse spider bites  Medical toxicologists are seeing more patients suffering from brown recluse spider bites this summer. The bites have two components, a cutaneous lesion and systemic symptoms which occur less frequently after a bite.

The symptoms following a bite include fever, rash, muscle pain and hemolysis (red blood cell breakdown) which makes a bite especially dangerous for children. Because of that, it is recommended that all children under 12 have a urine test for hemoglobin in the blood, (which indicates hemolysis) after a bite. Adults do not need a urine test unless the other symptoms of fever, rash or muscle pain are present. If none of the symptoms are present, ice is a better treatment than ointments or antibiotics. If any of the symptoms listed above occur, a doctor should be seen immediately.

“The brown recluse spider, also known as the violin spider, is usually between 6-20 mm. It is typically light to medium brown but can range in color from cream-colored to dark brown or blackish gray. It has six eyes instead of eight and can be identified by the violin-shaped marking on its back.

Although known as a poisonous spider, only about one person of every five years dies from a bite, although less severe but still serious effects are not uncommon. However, many bites are minor enough that the person doesn’t realize he has been bitten. Scientists still don’t know why certain people have such severe reactions to the bite, but they have determined that this newly discovered protein is behind it.

For those who do have a reaction to the venom, the most common response is inflammation that after one to two days can develop into a dark lesion surrounding the bite site. The blackening, or necrosis, of the skin is dead skin cells, evidence of the immune system’s efforts to prevent spread of the toxin by preventing blood flow to the affected area.

“Our bodies are basically committing tissue suicide,” Binford said. “That can be very minor to pretty major, like losing a big chunk of skin. The only treatment in that case is usually to have a skin graft done by a plastic surgeon.”

Here’s my take on the tips. First, while we think that all dogs instinctively can swim, that isn’t the case. Just as children need some encouragement and training, so too do certain dogs. My golden retriever Audie, for example, loves to swim now, but as a young dog he feared going out where he no longer could touch bottom. It was only when I went into the water with him and encouraged him to come that he was willing to try his skill at dog paddling in deeper water.

If you’re taking your dog in a boat, be sure to purchase a canine life preserver and strap it on him snugly so that it can’t come loose. Swimming in deeper water is one thing but trying to make it back to shore from a great distance after an accident is altogether different.

Commentary

The human body has over 100 trillion bacteria which need to be kept in balance. Antibiotics, diet, fluoridated water and our western lifestyle have wreaked havoc on the beneficial bacteria that naturally are present in our system to aid digestion. While antibiotics kill the bacteria that cause infection and make us sick, they also kill the good bacteria that we must have. More people are learning this every day and as a result, common knowledge now says that we should eat yogurt after taking a course of antibiotics. But is that enough?

While foods created from a culture, like yogurt, can help, they aren’t enough. That’s especially true because some popular brands actually contain more sugar than anything else, so that you aren’t even getting those good bacteria. When looking for yogurt, be sure that you get the most natural form possible, and that it actually contains probiotics like acidophilus. Yet even the best brands don’t provide nearly enough to compensate for what that course of antibiotics will have destroyed. 

So to supplement, bottled probiotics are becoming more popular. But all of the probiotics on the market are not the same. Some have only a few of the needed types of bacteria; others have very low levels of good bacteria in them. As a general rule, if they look like a bargain, they probably aren’t. And check expiration dates carefully. While most things don’t actually go bad by the date printed on the label. that’s not true of probiotics because they are live organisms. By the way, your cats and dogs have the same problem if they’ve taken antibiotics. Most like a little yogurt occasionally, but there also are a number of probiotics specifically designed for each species made by companies like Purina, Dr. Goodpet, and others, available at little cost.

But there’s something that’s much better than the best bottled probiotics. It’s a food that was much more common for past generations, and our ancestors made it in a way that maximized its beneficial effect. That food is fermented sauerkraut. The article below notes that the best results are obtained by making it yourself because the overcooked, pasteurized, sterile forms we purchase today have removed much of those beneficial bacteria just by the way it’s made and packaged. Making your own sauerkraut isn’t hard, and it’s one of the best, yet least expensive steps you can take to radically improve your health.

Making your own has another benefit also – taste. In the 1951 Cary Grant movie, “People Will Talk” Noah Praetorius (Grant), a man who was considered an old-fashioned country doctor even then, is sitting in the kitchen with his best friend eating sauerkraut. He laments, “Sauerkraut belongs in a barrel, not a can. Our American mania for sterile packages has removed the flavor from most of our foods. Butter is no longer sold out of wooden tubs, and a whole generation thinks butter tastes like paper. There was never a perfume like an old time grocery store. Now they smell like drug stores, which don’t even smell like drug stores anymore.” 

The film not only highlights some old fashioned values, it’s fun. And it makes one yearn for the days when sauerkraut in barrels, sauerkraut that tastes like the real thing, was common. But some evening, instead of sitting back watching this wonderful old film with a bowl of popcorn, try a bowl of homemade sauerkraut instead. Your body & soul both will benefit.

“Studies showing beneficial effects of high vitamin D levels are quite convincing. They not only show a correlation between low Vitamin D blood levels and the problem, but show improvement in the disease or prevention of the condition when levels are raised up through supplementation.

As an example, it has been shown in the laboratory that heart muscle does not contract well unless adequate Vitamin D is present.But to achieve the positive effects seen in many diseases, blood levels need to be in the range of 50 to 100 ng/dl, not the 20 ng/dl that laboratories report as the lowest range of “normal” (how labs determine “normal” is the subject of another column). Specifically in the case of breast cancer, if one achieves blood levels above 55 ng/dl, the risk of breast cancer is diminished 85 percent.

It is the observation of many, many practicing clinicians that 1) most patients test in the low 20s, and 2) 400 iu of Vitamin D a day – the government recommended daily allowance doesn’t raise the levels at all. Studies of equatorial inhabitants demonstrate that some of the longest-lived people on the planet obtain 30,000-40,000 iu of Vitamin D (specifically D3) a day from the sunlight – nature’s source of the vitamin. Given that, it is not suprising that supplementing 10,000 iu a day of Vitamin D3 has been shown to have no adverse effects.

 I for one take 10,000 units of Vitamin D3 a day. I have done so for over 7 years, and my levels of 55 ng/dl are barely in the optimal range of 50-100ng/dl. I recommend the same to all my patients. But I must warn them that the government, via the Institute of Medicine and the FDA, disagree and believe people should take only 600-800 iu a day.

Pineapple is a natural cough suppressant

Pineapple found to be five times more effective than cough syrup   When combined with other ingredients pineapple has been shown to relieve those suffering from hacking coughs and tuberculosis. The fruit is effective as a natural cough suppressant because it contains bromelain, an enzyme which fights inflammation and and is an aid to digestion. Junk food, antibiotics cause Crohn’s disease rates to triple among young persons    Although doctors don’t know exactly what causes it, in the UK consumption of junk food and widespread antibiotic use are being blamed. Yet American doctors are adamant that diet and emotional stress are not the cause. They maintain that genetic predisposition, an overactive immune system responding to intestinal viruses or bacteria is probably responsible. Because of that belief, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, not curing the disease.

Junk Food Encoded in Children’s DNA and Beyond:  New study ponders impact of Western food and GMOs on posterity’s genes…  It has been discovered that a “poorly trained immune system” can be passed genetically on to offspring as can a preference for junk food. The recent study came to some conclusions which should raise concern, not only for ourselves but for future generations who are being impacted by our choices.

While a properly functioning immune system can be transmitted to children, if the mother has an imbalance of bacteria in the gut, that too can be passed on to her children. That will lead to weakened immune systems in the children and increased risk for allergies and other diseases.

“What is perhaps of larger concern is that the harmful effects of diet can actually stretch across generations. A mother’s diet may potentially shape her child’s flavor preferences even before birth, potentially skewing their palette towards anything from vegetables to sugary sweets in ways that could influence subsequent propensity for obesity and/or unhealthy dieting. In addition, children inherent their microbiome from their mother mostly through parturition but also during breast-feeding and development until the bacterial balance matures around to four years of age.

Later, while the study definitely doesn’t condemn the genetic modification of food crops, major concern surrounds the inflammatory effects of certain Bt pesticide-resistant varieties and its potential genetic impact on gut bacteria, and perhaps that issue being passed on. They point out that it would be hard to fully determine since patent laws bar independent study without permission, and the potential for evidence suppression and conflict of interest on the word of biotech companies is a possibility. As Food Imports Increase, FDA Can’t Keep Up with Inspections Only 1 to 2 percent of food imported into the US is physically inspected each year. That is very troubling considering that much of the sold and food eaten here increasingly is from international sources. Because of that, the nation is more at risk for outbreaks of food-borne illnesses than ever before since virtually none of that imported food is being inspected. In 2011 the Food Safety Modernization Act was passed to address these problems but as yet, none of it has been implemented due to funding problems. Fifteen percent of our diet is imported from overseas and half of all winter fruits and vegetables originate outside the US. Even worse is the fact that almost all seafood is caught in non-US waters.

Part of the problem is the global economy. There are:

“130,000 export facilities in 150 countries to check on. The agency often inspects foreign processing plants only after there has been shown to be a problem with the product.”

While horror stories are beginning to make their way into news reports, few people know the extent of the problem and how dangerous the problem is. If they did, more would demand better funding and inspection procedures, or they would insist that food imports be limited.

“In India, Moon Fishery India Pvt. Ltd was found to be running a truly horrible operation, replete with “water tanks rife with microbiological contamination, rusty carving knives, peeling paint above the work area, unsanitary bathrooms and an ice machine covered with insects and ‘apparent bird feces,’” FairWarning and INN reported. The company’s exports to the U.S. were halted.

But by then tainted food had already reached the U.S., causing a salmonella outbreak that sickened 425 people, hospitalizing 55, in 28 states and the District of Columbia.”

If you eat seafood you need to see this video. But you should be warned, it was from a 2007 report. In the last 7 years, the situation has worsened so that almost all seafood now is imported and virtually none of it is inspected.

Benefits of Taking Fido to Work May Not Be Far ‘Fetched’

A Virginia Commonwealth University study found that having employees’ dogs in the workplace reduces stress and has a positive impact on all employees, not just on the dogs’ owners. Job satisfaction rose even among those who weren’t dog owners. At the North Carolina business where the week long study took place, 20-30 dogs are a regular feature of the work environment. Stress levels were measured through surveys and through objective indicators such as saliva samples.

“Stress is a major contributor to employee absenteeism, morale and burnout and results in significant loss of productivity and resources. But a preliminary study, published in the March issue of the International Journal of Workplace Health Management, found that dogs in the workplace may buffer the impact of stress during the workday for their owners and make the job more satisfying for those with whom they come into contact.

“Dogs in the workplace can make a positive difference,” he said. “The differences in perceived stress between days the dog was present and absent were significant. The employees as a whole had higher job satisfaction than industry norms.”

Pet presence may serve as a low-cost, wellness intervention readily available to many organizations and may enhance organizational satisfaction and perceptions of support. Of course, it is important to have policies in place to ensure only friendly, clean and well-behaved pets are present in the workplace,” he said.”

Prescription Drugs

Antidepressant use during pregnancy may lead to childhood obesity, diabetes  Research indicates that children may be predisposed to develop type 2 diabetes and obesity later, if their mothers took antidepressants while pregnant. Up to 20% of pregnant women are being prescribed these drugs at present. The study linked fluoxetine (or fluoride, see our post “Escape from Antidepressants” for more info on the dangers of these drugs). One in five American women suffer from depression during pregnancy and are prescribed antidepressant medication.

“While it is known that these drugs can increase the risk of obesity in adults, it is unknown whether a woman’s antidepressant use during pregnancy increases the risk of metabolic disturbances in her children…”

“We have demonstrated for the first time in an animal model that maternal use of a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, resulted in increased fat accumulation and inflammation in the liver of the adult offspring, raising new concerns about the long-term metabolic complications in children born to women who take SSRI antidepressants during pregnancy….”

More than other animals, dogs love to ride in cars. Summertime finds any number of cars on the highway with a canine head sticking out of a window, catching the breeze

All of the wonderful smells to absorb, glimpses of other dogs walking with their owners, views of other animals such as squirrels, bunnies and cats to dream of chasing – there’s nothing better for a dog. But what happens when the ride ends and we run into a store, “just for a minute” to get something? Many people believe that if they leave the windows down some, their pet will be fine. That’s especially true when it isn’t stifling hot but merely warm, at say, 72 degrees. But that’s a common fallacy, one that more and more municipalities are seeking to deal with through laws designed to protect pets from summer heat. In some locations you can be arrested for leaving a dog in a car and in others, your car can be towed away while you’re doing your shopping.

Because dogs can’t sweat like people can, even a small degree of heat can be deadly for them. And waiting in a car is the worst of all since rolling down windows helps very little, if at all, in keeping the temperature down. The video, chart, and articles linked below will give you an idea of how dangerous this practice really is, even at relatively cool temperatures. When I take my dog for a ride to the store, I lock him in the car with the air conditioning running on high, and even with that precaution, if I’m going to be longer than 10 minutes, I come out and check on him every 10 minutes or so. If it’s extremely hot, say in the mid-80s or above, he stays home, no matter how much he carries on when he sees me ready to leave. As my best friend, those are the least things I can do to protect him so that we have lots of exciting trips together in the future. If you see a dog in a parked car without air when it’s hot, call 911 and wait until someone arrives to help.

If you think you’re not taking any chances with your own dog because you’ve never had a problem before, please review the information below and think again, just to be safe. The heartbreak that comes with an accidental death from a preventable case of heat stroke will last a lifetime in your memory. And “If only,,,” won’t bring your friend back.

How hot do cars get?  Since it’s summer and we’re added a section on pet health, we’re addressing a common fallacy that if you open the windows a bit, your dog will be fine if he’s left in your car for a few minutes. The charts on this webpage will demonstrate how little outside temperature relates to the temperatures inside a car for a pet:

“A study from Stanford shows that even on comparatively cool days, such as 72 degrees, a car’s internal temperature will rocket to 116 degrees within 60 minutes. And keeping the windows open a crack hardly slows down the rise at all.”

Pets in hot cars  How dangerous is it to leave a pet or a child alone in a car on a day that’s merely warm? See this article for a good discussion of the subject:

“It takes only minutes for a pet left in a vehicle on a warm day to succumb to heatstroke and suffocation. Most people don’t realize how hot it can get in a parked car on a balmy day. However, on a 78 degree day, temperatures in a car parked in the shade can exceed 90 degrees — and hit a scorching 160 degrees if parked in the sun! 

Even when the outside air temperature is in the 60s, temperatures inside some vehicles can reach the danger zone on bright, sunny days. So many experts recommend not to leave pets or children in parked cars even for short periods if the temperature is in the 60s or higher. 

Rolling down a window or parking in the shade doesn’t guarantee protection either, since temperatures still can climb into the danger zone. And if the window is rolled down sufficiently, the pet can escape. Plus if a passer-by claims he or she was bitten through the car window, the pet owner will be liable.” 

…Animals are not able to sweat like humans do. Dogs cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paws. If they have only overheated air to breathe, animals can collapse, suffer brain damage and possibly die of heatstroke. Just 15 minutes can be enough for an animal’s body temperature to climb from a normal 102.5 to deadly levels that will damage the nervous and cardiovascular systems, often leaving the animal comatose, dehydrated and at risk of permanent impairment or death.” [Emphasis added.]

Dog Care: Protect Pets From Summer Scorchers  This article by the American Animal Hospital Association covers care for pets in hot weather, both inside and out of cars. It has a number of tips for making sure you dog enjoys the warm weather with you for a long time. Tips include making sure your pet has plenty of fresh, clean water available at all times, limiting exercise when it’s very hot and providing adequate shelter. That includes ensuring your pet can retreat to the shade when it’s sunny because it’s even easier for him to overheat in direct sunlight than it is for you. Finally, watch for these symptoms and take steps immediately should there be a problem despite your precautions:

If your pet is panting, has a staring or anxious expression, does not obey commands, has warm, dry skin and a high fever, rapid heartbeat, or is vomiting, lower the body temperature quickly with cool water – either by immersion or by spraying thoroughly with a garden hose. Call your veterinarian immediately.

Conclusion

It’s important for us to think of our pets and provide the best care we can for them. They are created by God and given to us as gifts that add to our enjoyment of life, and in addition, they demonstrate many traits that reflect their divine origin. We can learn a great deal from them and God uses them in many ways. But because they are dependent on us, He has given us the task of caring for them properly. In the summer, our responsibilities increase because of their susceptibility to heat. But bearing a few simple rules in mind will make the season enjoyable both for you and your pets.
